Tourism Minister Egyapa Mercer Suffers Stunning Upset in Sekondi

ACCRA, GHANA — DECEMBER 8, 2024

By MAVIS LAMISE AMAABA

Tourism Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, has suffered a stunning upset in a highly competitive race.

Preliminary counts indicate that Mercer was ousted by Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with Armah securing 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40% of the overall turnout.
Mercer garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total ballots cast. Out of the 25,813 votes cast, 171 ballots were rejected.

Mercer boasted an impressive electoral history in the Sekondi constituency, winning the 2016 and 2020 elections after taking over from Papa Owusu Ankomah.
However, his narrow loss to Armah marks a significant shift in the constituency’s political landscape.

The NDC’s victory in Sekondi marks a significant shift in the constituency’s political allegiance. The party’s win is seen as a major upset, given Mercer’s strong track record in the area.
