Namibia has made history by electing its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, from the governing South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo). She won over 57% of the votes, with her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, getting 26%.

However, the election was marred by logistical problems and allegations of electoral malpractice, leading Itula’s party to refuse to recognize the results. Despite this, Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to become Namibia’s first female president, joining Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan as one of the few female heads of state in Africa.
