President-elect John Mahama has moved to allay fears that his administration plans to abolish the Free Senior High School program, a contentious issue in Ghanaian politics.
In an interview with Voice of America, he stated that the program, introduced in 2017, is “here to stay” and “not going anywhere.” He acknowledged the program’s shortcomings but expressed his dedication to addressing these issues through reforms.
“We are going to maintain it,” he said. “What we are going to do is get dedicated funding for it.”
The Free SHS program has faced challenges such as overcrowding and insufficient infrastructure. However, the President-elect’s administration plans to secure dedicated funding to enhance the program’s efficiency and quality.
“Free SHS is a crucial component of our education system,” he confirmed. “We will review and strengthen it to address the challenges and improve quality.”
