The recent intermittent power outages in parts of Ghana have been linked to a disruption at the Tema Regulatory & Metering Station, managed by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).
According to a joint press release issued by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on December 11, the shutdown of key thermal power plants in Tema, a major hub for Ghana’s energy generation, was caused by “operational upsets” at WAPCo’s Tema Regulatory & Metering Station.
The press release explained that an unusually high amount of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station, a critical part of WAPCo’s gas transportation infrastructure. This influx of unexpected materials disrupted the normal functioning of the station, forcing WAPCo to halt operations temporarily.
As a result, the supply of natural gas to the thermal power plants in Tema was affected, leading to a shortfall in power supply. .
To balance the demand and supply of electricity, GRIDCo and ECG have implemented limited load management measures in various part of the country.
